About Catamaran
Background and context for founders evaluating this investor.
Catamaran is a Bengaluru-based global investment firm and family office established in 2009 by N.R. Narayana Murthy, the founder of Infosys, to manage the assets of Murthy and his family. Managing over $1 billion across asset classes — spanning public equity, private equity and growth-stage venture capital — Catamaran describes its purpose as being a catalyst that converts the ideas of passionate, skilled and value-driven entrepreneurs into tangible business outcomes, and it positions itself as a patient, long-term investor that prizes relationships, corporate governance and sustainable value creation. Its original venture vehicle, the roughly ₹600 crore Catamaran Venture Fund, made its first investment in SKS Microfinance and initially targeted healthcare, education and nutrition; over time the platform has built a diverse portfolio that includes SpaceX, deep-tech energy startup Log 9, B2B e-commerce leader udaan, edtech firm Udemy and fintech player Acko, among around 37 investments. Led by President Deepak Padaki and Chairman M.D. Ranganath (a former Infosys CFO), Catamaran has more recently signalled a focus on services and precision manufacturing — backing startups capable of exporting deep-tech and automotive components as India attracts manufacturing investment. It is a separate entity from the now-winding-down UK-based Catamaran Ventures associated with Akshata Murty, with no investment overlap between the two.
