Alt Carbon Secures Landmark Carbon Removal Deal with Microsoft
In a monumental leap for India’s burgeoning climate tech sector, Alt Carbon has officially inked a historic agreement with tech giant Microsoft. This partnership marks the first-ever carbon removal deal of its kind in Asia, positioning the Indian startup at the forefront of the global fight against climate change. By leveraging the natural power of enhanced rock weathering, Alt Carbon is proving that scalable, high-quality carbon removal solutions can be effectively deployed within the Indian landscape.
Alt Carbon specializes in an innovative process that accelerates the natural chemical reaction between silicate rocks and atmospheric carbon dioxide. By applying crushed basalt to tea estates, the startup not only captures carbon at scale but also enhances soil health, creating a dual-benefit model that supports both the environment and the agricultural sector. This scientific approach has caught the attention of global sustainability leaders, with Microsoft selecting Alt Carbon as a key partner in its ambitious goal to become carbon negative by 2030.
Why This Matters for the Climate Tech Ecosystem
The significance of this deal extends far beyond a single contract. For the Indian startup ecosystem, it serves as a powerful validation of the country’s potential to export sophisticated climate solutions to the world. While many carbon removal projects are concentrated in the West, Alt Carbon’s integration into tea estates demonstrates a unique, localized application of climate science that is both cost-effective and highly scalable.
As corporations worldwide scramble to meet net-zero commitments, the demand for verified, high-integrity carbon removal credits is skyrocketing. By securing a partnership with a buyer as rigorous as Microsoft, Alt Carbon has effectively set a new benchmark for quality and transparency in the Asian carbon market. This milestone not only provides the startup with significant momentum but also signals to global investors that India is rapidly becoming a critical hub for the next generation of climate-positive technologies.
As Alt Carbon continues to scale its operations across tea plantations, the industry will be watching closely. This partnership is a clear indicator that the future of carbon removal is not just about technology—it is about finding innovative ways to work with nature to restore the balance of our planet.
